In Memorial
Bruce Riddle was born on October 11, 1955, in Providence, Rhode Island, to Walter and Virginia Riddle. His older brother, Walter Riddle, Jr., had just joined the Air Force but his older sister, Nancy, was still at home and just the right age to welcome a baby into the house. Soon after Bruce was born the family moved to Asheville, NC, where Bruce grew up and where his younger sister, Janet, was born.
He attended North Carolina State University for his freshman and sophomore years, then transferred to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, from which he graduated with a degree in accounting. Bruce was one of only a handful of students to pass the CPA exam while still a senior in college.
Bruce was recruited by Ernest and Ernest (now EY) when he graduated. He worked there for several years, then went into the private sector to be the CFO for a firm which developed historical properties for commercial use. He was soon lured back to work for another of the “Big 8” accounting firms, KPMG, and while working for them moved up to Washington, DC. He left KPMG to become Partner in Charge of Tax for a prestigious, local Maryland accounting firm, Councilor, Buchanan and Mitchell. Bruce left CB&M to form his own firm, BDR Associates, in the late 90’s. He enjoyed working directly with his clients and formed deep friendships with many of them.
Bruce was an athlete all his life and enjoyed playing and watching many sports. His favorites were baseball, basketball, tennis, golf and Nascar. He prided himself on his knowledge of sports facts, numbers and dates, and of all the major sporting events he had been lucky to attend. He was a diehard UNC fan and also loved the Redskins and the Orioles.
Bruce loved Rock and Roll music and could not only name almost any song from the 60’s and 70’s but also who made the song famous and the year it came out.
Bruce loved to travel and kept a list of the many countries he had visited. He enjoyed new experiences and meeting new people. He especially loved visiting his friends in Scotland, playing golf there and attending the British Open. He also loved Maui and our great niece and nephew who live on Maui, Grace and Gage, became his surrogate grandchildren.
Bruce will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, his two stepchildren, Robert Leichtman and Isabelle Franz and his son-in-law, Shawn Franz, and his toy poodle, “Angel Baby” Lucy. He is also survived by his two sisters, Janet Hayes and Nancy Bruce, and their families, and the families of his deceased brother, Walt Riddle.
